Health anxiety is a type of anxiety where you have an excessive and persistent fear about your health, convinced that you have a serious illness.
It can lead to excessive worry and you find yourself checking your body for symptoms, despite repeated reassurances from healthcare professionals that you are healthy.
On the flip side you may begin panicking at the thought of doing routine body checks and even avoid visiting a Doctor because you fear that you will hear the worst.
Constantly checking symptoms on the internet can be a hallmark of health anxiety and it is common for individuals with health anxiety to seek reassurance through research, including looking up symptoms on Dr. Google in an attempt to alleviate worry and fear of having a serious illness.
However, searching for information about illnesses on the internet can often worsen health anxiety by reinforcing negative thoughts and increasing the fear even more.
This cycle of fear, research, convincing yourself of impending doom can be difficult to break, and have a significant impact on your daily life and your relationships.
This behaviour can actually perpetuate health anxiety and make symptoms worse by reinforcing the belief that you have a serious illness which leads to an ever increasing worry.
It is recommended to limit your exposure to health-related information, especially from unreliable sources, and to seek professional help to manage your Health Anxiety.
