Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a mental health condition characterised by persistent, intrusive thoughts, images, or impulses (obsessions) that generate anxiety.
OCD can cause significant distress and interfere with daily life, but it can be treated with the correct therapy.
Obsessions are unwanted, intrusive, and often distressing thoughts, images, or impulses that repeatedly enter a person's mind.
Compulsions are repetitive behaviours or mental acts that the person feels driven to perform in response to the obsessions.
The repetitive behaviours or mental acts (compulsions) that a person feels compelled to perform in response to the obsessions is in an effort to reduce the anxiety.
Although these compulsions are performed with the aim of reducing anxiety, or something bad from happening they are not realistically connected to the obsessions and are excessive or unreasonable, but the person with OCD performs them anyway.
This can cause significant distress and interfere with daily activities, daily life and relationships.
